Whitney Matheson

A well rounded and versatile athlete, Whitney began her volleyball career sandwiched amongst basketball, fastball, and track field teams. Throughout junior high and high school, Whitney excelled in sport - with many medal finishes and being named female athlete of the year at both her junior and senior high schools along the way.

Growing older, and with teams requiring more commitment, Whitney decided that volleyball was her favorite sweaty pursuit and made it her focus. Beginning club volleyball from 14U onward, Whitney looked forward to the team building, training, and tournaments that club volleyball offers each year. Determined to play as much volleyball as possible, Whitney successfully tried out for Team Alberta each year from 16U onward.

Scouted by Grant MacEwan University in her grade 12 year, Whitney began her varsity career in the ACAC as a Griffin - with medal finishes at both provincial and national competitions and receiving various MVP accolades each season including Academic All Canadian Awards.

With a desire to push her game to the next level, Whitney set her sights on the CIS (now USport) and decided to tryout for the University of Alberta Pandas to make the most of her last two years of eligibility. As a Panda, Whitney benefited from some the best training and coaching in the country and took her skill and game knowledge to new heights.

After graduating and retiring from varsity sport, Whitney carried on coaching through Pandas indoor and beach volleyball camps and assistant coached the 14U Pandas Club team with Erin Walsh in 2015. After a two year hiatus, living in Australia, Whitney Head Coached the 14U Pandas Club team in 2018. Following that, she assisted Meggie Moir with the U15 team in 2019 and is excited to be doing so again for the 2022 season.

Coaching philosophy: grounded in empowering young athletes to be their best selves on and off the court, Whitney is committed to facilitating a welcoming, inclusive and supportive team culture. Supported by extensive coaching and post secondary playing experience, Whitney has a wealth of technical knowledge to offer.
